Talented rock star John Norman Howard has seen his career begin to decline. Too many years of concerts and managers and life on the road have made him cynical and the monotony has taken its toll. Then he meets the innocent, pure and very talented singer Esther Hoffman. As one of his songs in the movie says "I'm gonna take you girl, I'm gonna show you how." And he does. He shows Esther the way to stardom while forsaking his own career. As they fall in love, her success only makes his decline even more apparent.

Kris Kristofferson said, "Filming with Barbra Streisand is an experience which may have cured me of the movies."

Kris Kristofferson did not get along with the director. According to Kristofferson, Frank Pierson, himself a World War II veteran, looked down on Kristofferson for being in the Army, but not going to war in Vietnam. Kristofferson later said, "I was too drunk to give a shit."

The rock concert footage was shot before a crowd of 47,000 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson headlining. Other acts included Peter Frampton and Santana. A ticket cost $3.50.

Barbra Streisand wanted Elvis Presley for the part of John Norman Howard. She even went to Las Vegas to see Elvis after one of his performances in 1975, and talked to him directly. Elvis wanted to do it, but his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was angry that Streisand hadn't come to him first. He told the producers that if they wanted Elvis, his name had to be at the top of the movie poster, above Streisand's. He also asked for a very large sum of money. Elvis hadn't been in a movie since 1969, and nobody knew what he could do at the box office.

As of 2023, this is the only version of the film in which the two leads were not nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Continuity

After John Norman crashes his motorcycle, and Esther runs to him, there are dirty hand prints on the back of her blouse before John Norman pulls her down in the dirt and puts his hands on her back.

In her anger at John Norman for being "a liar", Esther tears up the cassette with the only record of "One More Look at You", which he never finished writing. Yet somehow, she is able to perform the complete song in the final concert sequence.

Before performing at the charity concert, John detaches a label from Esther's jacket twice.

During the first breakfast of John and Esther, the layout of hands and dishes changes several times between shots.

After the fight in the mud, when John decides to shave his beard, the dirt on Esther's clothes changes.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

The cap on the wine bottle changes (on and off) many times during the first breakfast scene. The cap on the wine bottle, when it is not obscured by one of the flowers on the table, is on the bottle. There is a single instance, in a very quick shot, when it might be off, but this could be due to John Norman having just poured (or about to pour) some into his glass.

Revealing mistakes

The very last line of the song Esther sings during the big climax performance, "Are you watching me now", is sung with the microphone away from her mouth, revealing it to be lip-synced. Esther does, however, mouth the word "now" even though the microphone is still not anywhere near her mouth.

Audio/visual unsynchronized

As John is driving from the ranch house, ostensibly to the airport to pick up Brian, the music from his 8-track player begins before the tape is fully inserted.

Character error

In the swimming pool after the motorcycle accident at the stadium concert, John N. Howard has Ace bandages on his foot and right hand. Yet, he is shown using the right hand to use a pair of crutches (would be too painful with a wrist sprain). He also is shown swimming, which is also painful to sprained joints. He is not shown wincing at all while swimming. He also puts weight on his right hand as he is getting out of the pool, pushing up on his fingertips on a straightened wrist. This would not be possible without severe pain, if the wrist is, in fact, damaged enough to require an Ace bandage.
