Tim Burton has said that this film would only be made if Michael Keaton would return to reprise his role. Keaton said in March of 2014 that this is the only sequel he's interested in doing.

Michael Keaton said he and Tim Burton were particularly interested in doing a film that wasn't too technology-heavy. They wanted it to have the same practical effects of the original.

Winona Ryder had only one condition when she first met Stranger Things (2016) creators Matt and Ross Duffer for a role they wanted her to play on Netflix: If "Beetlejuice 2" ever got off the ground, they'd have to let her take a break from the series to film it. They agreed.

Tim Burton stated he was done making movies until he directed the first four episodes of Netflix hit Wednesday (2022), which prompted him to reassess the original Beetlejuice and its potential for a sequel.

While seated next to the crazy cat lady in the waiting room, Beetlejuice comments, "I'm more of a dog person." Later, during his musical wedding number, his dog is shown as one of his past loves, along with Lydia and Delores.

Continuity

When Dolores has finished reassembling herself with a staple gun, the audience sees that the staples on her face are spaced 1.5"-2" apart, for a total of 10 staples from chin to forehead. Later as she is walking toward the camera (her only purpose in this movie, apparently), she has approximately 21 staples on her face, spaced about 0.5" apart.

The Claymation CHARLES is attacked by the shark from the behind and looks totally engulfed, but when he shows up in the WAITING ROOM his upper torso and head look like he was bitten at the top.

Factual errors

Astrid Deetz says the snakes were poisonous. Should have said venomous.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

The film makes a reference to "French physicist" Maria Sklodowska-Curie; she is, in fact, one of the most famous Polish scientists in history, often considered second only to Copernicus.

Astrid calls Marie Curie a "French physicist". This is wrong. Maria Sklodowska-Curie was born in Poland and moved to France as an adult. She discovered radioactivity and named an element after her homeland - Polonium.

Miscellaneous

At Charles Deetz's funeral you can see one of the grave stones gently move in the wind, possibly made from Styrofoam. Another gravestone also easily moves when Wolf Jackson gently touches it when he and the police are about to raid the church.

Crew or equipment visible

In the opening title sequence, while the camera flies over the red covered bridge at 2:00, you can see two white folding signs on the left side of the frame. These signs were used to direct traffic during filming. The behind the scenes featurette titled "The Juice is Loose" shows that the signs read "SLOW 5 MPH" and "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY".

Plot holes

Lydia's husband is working as a civil servant in the afterlife, which means he must have committed suicide, a rule established in the previous film. However, dialogue in two separate scenes makes it clear that his death was accidental. The newspaper in the movie states that the authorities in charge often mistake non suicide deaths for suicide that might be why he is now a civil servant. Also, the audience doesn't know fully how he died and it's possible he went into a situation where death was highly likely aka a suicide mission.

In the original film, it is clearly established that time moves significantly differently in the Netherworld compared to the real world. In this film however, characters just hop between the two with no time lapse.

If Beetlejuice died by being poisoned by Delores, Beetlejuice couldn't have been an assistant to Juno as mentioned in the 1988 film. Only those who died by suicide could be a civil servant. The newspaper in the movie states that the authorities in charge often mistake non suicide deaths for suicide, that's why they are working as civil servants. It's also possible Beetlejuice was lying about the story.

Lydia has the supernatural ability to connect to the dead, but it's never explained why she's unable to see or hear her late husband, Astrid's father, who is clearly dead and working as a civil servant in the afterlife.

Character error

Lydia informs Astrid that Rory wants to get married at midnight on Halloween night. That would make it November 1st, as midnight is the start of a new day, and thus it would no longer be Halloween.
