Quotes

Joe Danby: [about his father] He's got a heart as big as the whole outdoors, but he don't have one brain in his poor old head.

Filming Locations

Iverson Ranch - 1 Iverson Lane, Chatsworth, Los Angeles, California, USA

On the wall in the jail, the wanted poster for "Ben Silas" is the same prop seen frequently in Gunsmoke (1955).

Though not a sequel nor related to this storyline, this movie was followed by Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971), with most of the cast intact playing similar characters.

This movie was made by the Artists' Union as a way to keep many of the writers, actors and production crew working. James Garner was the only person involved with the movie who made more than scale. Fans of films and television of this era will recognize literally dozens of familiar faces among the character actors in this film, which makes the film seem like a actors benefit.

Walter Brennan's part was a spoof of his part in My Darling Clementine (1946), in which he was head of the Clanton clan.

The bordello named "Madam Orr's House" is an interesting play on words; it appears to be a subtle dig at William T. Orr, a Warner Bros. executive who produced James Garner's TV series Maverick (1957) and with whom Garner had a contentious relationship because of conflicts over unfair contracts.

Continuity

When the Danbys come into town for the final showdown, there are 13 of them. During the battle, two are shot down by Prudy, yet when they all come to the cannon at the end, there are still 13 of them.

When Prudy is grabbed in the butt by one of the fighters during the mud fight, you can see the exact same scene from a distance a few seconds before. The scene is used twice.

When Jason, as the newly appointed Sheriff goes to arrest Joe Danby, he is saved from being shot in the back by Jake. When the camera goes to Jake, he is behind and to the right of the Sheriff. However, in the shots showing the sheriff from the front, Jake is not visible in the saloon.

Before the final shootout, about a dozen Danbys are shown riding into town and dismounting. There is a cut to two men walking towards the sheriff's office, but when the camera cuts back, all the horses have now disappeared.

During the final gun battle, the intact portions of the glass windows that Prudy has broken change from shot to shot.

Factual errors

In the first bar scene where Latigo bets $4,600 on his first roulette 23, the bartender is pouring from a bottle of Cutty Dark whiskey, which wasn't founded until 1923.

Revealing mistakes

When the sheriff first goes to the new jail, he finds a bucket of red paint and yet nothing in the entire office had been painted red. The cell blocks were brick and the walls in the office were yellow.

During the fight at Emma's, a man gets a plateful of food mashed into his face. The "metal" plate folds like a paper plate.

The town has just been built, and the mayor and council talk about how they haven't had time to correct the problems. However, the plants and shrubbery and trees all around the town have had to take a year or two to grow.

During the time when the sheriff goes into the saloon the first time, you can hear the same background chatter sound track repeat at least 3 times just before the scream.

During the mud fight scene when Jason and the town council use the 'fire engine' to break up the fight, there is no water source and the engine has no water tank.

Miscellaneous

The sidewalk in front of the mayor's house is covered in dirt but is obviously made of raised concrete with a low curb.

Suzanne Pleshette is not listed in the cast listing as Patience.

Anachronisms

Whilst in the hardware store, the major covers the hole in a metal washer with masking tape so that Jason McCullough can demonstrate his shooting skill. The movie appears to be set in the 19th century, and adhesive tape was not invented until 1925.

Plot holes

When Prudy is counting the number of the Danbys who will come to town, she calls Walter Brennan Milt Danby. Pa's name is never given, but Milt Danby is Pa's brother. She goes on to tell Jason that Pa's other brother Ira Danby has three boys and Milt has two. However, in the jailbreak scene, Pa Danby tells Luke Danby to ride to Milt's and get Steve, George, and Little Milt, and he tells Tom to ride to Ira's to bring back him and his two sons, Billy and Jack. She switched the number of children for each brother.

Character error

After the sheriff leaves the red paint disguised as blood on the floor to discourage jail breaks, he leaves the bucket of red paint and brush by the cell thus exposing the illusion.

When clarifying the job as sheriff, Jason says, "One-hundred fifty dollars for room and board..." instead of, "...dollars PLUS room and board..."
