The Dan Cushman novel on which this film was based had previously served as the basis for the 1958 Broadway musical "Whoop-Up," which starred Ralph Young in the Presley role.
Elvis Presley gave small roles to his friends Del 'Sonny' West, Joe Esposito and Charlie Hodge.
Quentin Dean, who plays Joan Blondell's promiscuous daughter here, is best remembered for playing a similar role in the 1967 Best Picture winner, In the Heat of the Night.
During the fight scene at the party, Elvis Presley goes outside to tell the band to play something slow. He and his friend Charlie Hodge, who has a bit role in the film as a guitar player in the band, start cracking up during Elvis' line. Charlie later said the reason for the laughter was that it was cold outside and Elvis' nose was running.
65th highest grossing film in the US of 1968.
Continuity
At Joe's welcome home party, Joe encounters Bronc in the house, and then leaves him standing there to go outside. When he gets outside, his point-of-view is shown, and Bronc is outside with a girl.
Bronc's (L.Q. Jones) hair changes color in scenes of the welcome home party, from black to brown to black again.
Revealing mistakes
During the opening sequences when Joe Lightcloud is "herding" the cattle with the Cadillac, the tires are screeching as he makes sharp turns. As he is on dirt and not pavement, these sounds wouldn't have been heard.
Several times during Joe's welcome home party, the background music from the little country band changes: with one acoustic guitar, turns into a blues-rock band with two electric guitars, and then back again.
