Levon Helm was originally cast in the movie as a U.S. Marshal. Before filming began, Helm shot himself in the leg while practicing quick-draw techniques in his backyard and the role had to be recast.
Sam peckinpah was originally slated as director at one stage of preproduction but was replaced. Sam was also attached to direct 'songwriter' which also would have teamed him with star Willie Nelson.
Final film of Ann Norman.
Revealing mistakes
In a long shot with a windmill, the windmill is turning, but facing away from the wind's direction as revealed by dust blowing, etc. (the wrong way).
Audio/visual unsynchronized
In the bar shooting, the Preacher fired once but two people were killed. The victims were positioned where a single bullet could not have killed them both. There should have been the sound of a second shot. Correction: They show one shot fired in the saloon, but they use two shot fired in the cut scene from the street.
