The Ambushers (1967)
Without a doubt, there's a mole in the secret Intelligence and Counter Espionage agency. Right after the successful launch of the first state-of-the-art USAF flying saucer, the powerful tractor beam of a nefarious criminal organisation forces the experimental vessel to crash-land in the lush Central-American jungles. As a result, having no recollection of the mysterious incident, the amnesiac test pilot, Sheila Sommers, will have to join forces with the spy extraordinaire and suave photographer, Matt Helm, and travel to sun-kissed Acapulco to shed light on this thorny case. Nevertheless, their luxurious Mexican resort is rife with deadly traps and crafty double-agents, bent on stopping the prying intruders. Will Matt and Sheila unearth the dangerous conspiracy? Can they retrieve the top-secret spacecraft?
Matt Helm rides again! ...with the Ambushers on his back, and some fun on the side!
Matt Helm: I'll remember you from the great beyond - somewhere around Steubenville, I hope.
Fort?n de las Flores, Mexico
Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico
Tlayacapan, Morelos, Mexico
Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico
This was Beverly Adams's final appearance as Matt's secretary, Lovey Kravezit.
The music played during the first and last scene involving Matt Helm was Dean Martin's 1964 hit Everybody loves Somebody Sometimes. It was Dean Martin's only song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 during the 60's.
To create the effect of Sheila's half orange, half purple dress and skirt being unzipped by the villain's gadget, thin wires were attached to the zippers on actress Janice Rule's clothes and then pulled on by off camera crewmen, effectively stripping the actress while leaving her clad only in a strapless slip.
When Matt is standing in front of the wall as the firing squad is getting ready to execute him, he asks for one last cigarette. The guard next to him offers him one and as he takes it he says "I'll remember you from the great beyond, somewhere around Steubenville, I hope." This is a reference to Steubenville Ohio along the Ohio/West Virginia border, the small town where Dean Martin was born in 1917.
This was James Gregory's final appearance as Matt's boss, MacDonald.
Continuity
Matt pulls his car off the road, pulls a lever resulting in a large inflatable tent. He unzips the flap and looking inside there's a circular bed, bedside table and fridge. He ushers Sheila in and follows. The inflatable items are now solid and in addition there are 2 chairs and there's a radio on the table. Cut to when they're in bed, which is now against one of the walls, they have proper pillows and the gold colored cover is now a green blanket- when it was earlier seen in the car boot it was black or dark blue and by freeze framing it can be seen that there are now magazines, a phone and a camera on the table.
Revealing mistakes
Throughout the entire film you can see the wires that are used to lift things and people up whenever the "anti-gravity ray" is used. This is especially obvious in the scenes where the saucer is brought down to the jungle and when Matt rescues Sheila from the runaway train wagon.
