Plot Synopsis

1916. Dreaming about saving countless lives and having another adventure, the feisty English feminist and doctor of botany, Dr Lily Houghton, embarks on a peril-laden mission to change the world. Along with her fashionable brother, MacGregor, Dr Houghton enlists the help of the arrogant, wisecracking riverboat skipper, Captain Frank Wolff, to guide them through the serpentine Amazon River in La Quila, his swift wooden boat. Now, as the intrepid trio ventures deeper and deeper into the heart of an impenetrable green maze, searching for something that cannot be found, a centuries-old curse and the ruthless aristocrat, Prince Joachim, threaten to put an end to their ambitious plans. And, sooner or later, the jungle always wins. Is it true that the Spanish conquistador, Don Aguirre, was lost in the same God-forsaken part of the world?

Tagline

Only one adventure gets this wild.

Quotes

Frank Wolff: I get paid by the number of people I take out, not by the number of people I bring back.

Filming Locations

Kaua'i, Hawaii, USA

Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Many of the puns Frank uses are taken directly from the Disney Parks attraction on which the movie is based. These "so bad they're good" jokes are one of the reasons why Jungle Cruise skippers are so important to the ride experience.

Frank describes himself as a "skipper." This is the title given to Disney cast members who act as tour guides on the Jungle Cruise ride. Famous former skippers include Kevin Costner and John Lasseter.

Emily Blunt originally turned down the role of Lily twice due to exhaustion working on Mary Poppins Returns (2018) and A Quiet Place Part II (2020) back-to-back. Director Jaume Collet-Serra flew to New York to meet Blunt to explain why she was wanted for the role. He also brought along a video message from Dwayne Johnson (in his producing capacity) pitching about the role and wanting to work with her which Johnson recorded the night before. That video eventually got her to sign up for the role. The other producers and even Sean Bailey, Disney's head of live production, had previously tried to appeal to her for the role but received no response from her.

There are several elements from the park attraction featured in the trailer. The most notable is the "back side of water" gag that most of the cast members use during the attraction.

The arrowhead was discovered by "Dr. Albert Falls." This is a reference to a joke often used by skippers on the theme park ride: "These are the famous Schweizer Falls, named for their discoverer: Dr. Albert Falls."

Continuity

When MacGregor boards the La Quila, he's dry. Shortly after as Joachim attacks in his submarine and Frank tries to dodge, he appears with wet clothes and hair. This is due to a deleted scene (labeled as "MacGregor Water Skis" on streaming and Blu-Ray bonus features) in which he goes overboard, but is rescued by Lily.

In the submarine chase at the start of the journey the crew was seen loading the starboard torpedo tube but fired the port tube.

Factual errors

The protagonists' journey is to travel upstream on the Amazon. However, one of the obstacles they encounter is rapids and waterfall going downstream.

Prince Joachim is supposed to be the youngest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II (indeed, the real youngest son of the Kaiser was named Joachim), yet he is wearing the double-headed eagle of the Russian Imperial Crown as the ornament around his neck.

The traffic in Piccadilly Circus is shown travelling in both directions on the western side as it does today. In 1916 Piccadilly Circus was a roundabout and all traffic would have traveled in a clockwise direction around it.

The electric ceiling fan was invented by 1916, but not used in hotels until at least the 1920s. It was not used in ceilings of average height in private residences until the 1940s in the US, let alone in the middle of the Amazon Jungle in 1916.

The German Highness uses a non-blasting machine device to generate the charge needed to detonate the explosives which was not possible in 1919.

Revealing mistakes

When fighting the thugs that first try to kidnap Lily at the harbor, the pot Frank uses to hit one of the men bends and wobbles when placed on the man's head, as it made of rubber.

Miscellaneous

How is it possible for the youngest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II to be present in London in the middle of World War I?

When Frank and Lily are getting into the automobile at the end of the movie, you can see two British Union flags in the background that are displayed upside down.

Anachronisms

Frank makes a joke about concentrated orange juice that was not invented for another 32 years.

The movie uses the Real (R$) as the currency. But Brazil had several different currencies throughout the years. The Real has been in use since July 1st 1994. In 1916, when the movie is set, the currency should be MIL R?IS (Rs). The bills are for the correct currency but the ones used are from the version printed in 1929. 12 years after the period the film is set. Not the version that would be in circulation in 1916.

Plot holes

Prince Joachim knows where the trapped Spanish are located. There was no record of this because only Skipper knew where he trapped them.

Early in the movie, Nilo's thugs repossess Frank's boat's engine, a standard V-type diesel, to settle an unpaid loan. Later, after the engine is taken back and re-installed, instead of throttling up the diesel engine, Frank opens the firebox of a separate steam engine and throws in wood fuel in order to accelerate to top speed.

The Amazonians knockout MacGregor, Lily, and Frank - in that order - with tranquilizing darts. Though it later turns out whole thing was a ploy to get the arrowhead and Frank was in on it. There was no point knocking him out when the Houghtons were already unconscious, thus couldn't have seen it happen.

Character error

Frank urges Lily to take a bath in the river, but knows there are piranhas in it.
