This film was shot at a location in the Spanish desert. A short distance away another European western, which would become known as a "spaghetti western", was being shot by Italian director Sergio Leone with American actor Clint Eastwood. That film, then known in English as "The Magnificent Stranger", would be re-titled "Fistful of Dollars" and go on to become an international box office sensation.
This was the first Western with a musical score from Ennio Morricone, though he used the named Dan Savio in the credits. He would go on to score dozens more Italian westerns, working most notably with such directors as Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Sollima.
Richard Harrison had bit parts in seven U.S. made films in the 1950s, including "South Pacific," before heading to Italy and appearing in "Avenger of the Seven Seas" in 1961. This marked his first "Spaghetti Western." Working in Italy, he made numerous gladiator and other costume movies, as well as crime thrillers and westerns, appearing much later in several Hong Kong films.
